In Istanbul, it is always possible to see some street animals around. Unfortunately they do not live too long but various people try to feed these animals whenever they can.

Below you will find locations and pictures of the animals that we feed. Please feel free to add your pics and locations.

İstanbul’da sokaklarda her zaman hayvanlara rastlıyoruz ve maalesef çoğu pek uzun yaşamıyorlar. Ama bir sürü insan bu hayvanları bir şekilde besliyor.

Kiva Fellow Application

Well I am in the process of applying for Kiva.

They apparently would like to see applicant’s ability to post blogs.

Coming back from retirement

It has been almost a year since I stopped updating my blog frequently. During the year, I had to take care of some school stuff but this is no excuse of not visiting this blog more often. I will try to keep blogging for several reasons. first of all, it allows me to organize my thoughts and put them in writing so I can know what I was thinking in the past. Secondly, I feel like writing and need to send the message out. Thirdly, I hope that someone find my writings interesting. Of course, what I am afraid of is to create more noise in the blogsphere and cause note-worthy blogs to be read less or missed completely.

Ahmet Ertegün

One of the most important figures in the modern American music, founder of the Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegün passed away. Some of the famous people he made stars included Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin.

Throughout his life, he strived for close relationship between U.S. and Turkey. Son of the Turkish Ambassador to Washington, he came to U.S. at the age of 11. He will be buried in Turkey. May God’s mercy be upon him.

Grameen Bank

It has been long time since I wrote and this is probably not a good time to write either but I feel like it, so will not hold myself. Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank have just received his Nobel peace prize for his efforts to empower the poor. The bank that he initially setup in 1976 with just $27 has now 6.6 million borrowers and 97% collection rate and the majority of the borrowers (more than 95%) are women. I think he well deserved this price at least for two reasons:
1) First of all, he found a way to empower the poor in a collective manner

2) Secondly, his efforts focus on the women, who are often more oppressed than man.

May God make his path open and clear.

Hope in Hell

Currently, I am reading a book called Hope in Hell, written by Dan Bortolotti. The book is about the humanitarian aid agency, Doctors Without Borders or Medecins sans frontiers (MSF). It is trully amazing to see what people are doing to bring some humanitarian aid to the people all over the world. It takes one away from the regular daily struggles (some of them might be non-sense) and shows that there are people in this world who work to make this planet a better place. The book also reminds us there is so much that the MSF can do and there is much work to do by politicians or UN to act on time for various crises.

Over the Hedge

Yesterday, I went to see the movie “Over the Hedge” . It was pretty funny movie with some messages for us humans. The message that I was most impressed with the one that came from RJ, the racoon. When he was describing humans’ food habits (how we waste food, how we kind of worship food), he said “We (animals) eat to live, humans live to eat”

I just felt like writing some sayings I heard and read over the years.

- Do you live to eat or do you eat to live?
